General Washington had his headquarters here in the DeWindt House in late September and early October 1780. Here he ordered the trial of accused British spy Major Andre, and here he signed the death warrant after a guilty verdict was returned by the court. During this time at the DeWindt House, Washington issued the orders that authorized Champe to fake desertion to the British in an attempt to capture the traitor Arnold. See my galleries on Champe for more details.
Toward the end of the war, Washington met here with Sir Guy Carleton to negotiate the orderly departure of the British from New York. Carleton had arrived by ship from New York, and on the following day Washington visited Carleton aboard his ship anchored in the Hudson. It was on that occasion that the first salute to the American flag was fired by the Royal Navy.
