Daniel Putnam (1739-1809) was a blacksmith of whom "it is said that he had the distinguished honor of cutting the handcuffs from the wrists of Major Andre as he was about to be executed," according to two sources: "History of the Town of Cornish, NH" by William H. Child (1911), and "A History of the Putnam Family in England and America", vol. 1, by Eben Putnam, 1891.

Putman's gravestone is the dark one just to the right of center in the front row in this photo. As you walk past the meetinghouse and enter the cemetery, you will find the grave in the left section of the cemetery, in the fourth row from the back, third stone from the dirt road separating the two sections.
