Andre Trial Site

The current church is the third on the site. In the second structure accused British spy Major John Andre stood trial on Sept. 29, 1780. Gen. Nathaniel Greene presided over a court-martial consisting of Lafayette, von Steuben and eleven other high-ranking generals. They recommended to Washington that Andre "ought to be considered as a spy from the enemy and that, agreeable to the law and usage of nations, it is their opinion he ought to suffer death."
