  1. The Culper Spy Ring

Anna Smith Strong Grave *

Saint Georges Manor Cemetery, also known as Smith-Strong Cemetery, Cemetery Lane, Setauket, NY

Anna Strong was an important link in the Culper Spy Ring. She would signal the availability and location of secret rendezvous with Caleb Brewster by the arrangement of laundry hung on her clothesline. Brewster would carry the messages across the Sound by whaleboat. She was a friend of Abraham Woodhull, and lived in a small house on Strong's Neck during the time her family's manor home was occupied by British officers (for most of the war) and her husband was in British custody at the Sugar House prison. When her husband was released, he spent the rest of the war in Connecticut with their children, but "Nancy" (Anna) stayed at her post in Setauket.
