  1. The Captors of Major Andre

Fenimore Art Museum

5798 State Highway 80, Cooperstown, NY

Formerly called Fenimore House, this museum operated by the New York State Historical Association has in its collection plaster life masks taken of the Captors of Major Andre in their old age. In the 1940s, the museum commissioned bronze busts of the casts. In an email exchange with a representative of the museum (Nov 2015) I found that the items are no longer on display, and are kept in off-site storage.

This postcard in my collection was purchased at The Historical Society Serving Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow (see my gallery on their Andre Capture Room.) The reverse side of the postcard says: "The Bicentennial of the Capture in Tarrytown of Major Andre by three local militiamen as he was returning from secret conference with the traitor Major General Benedict Arnold about the surrender of West Point. These life masks of the Captors by Browere are on permanent display at Fenimore House, New York State Historical Association in Cooperstown." As I note in this gallery's text, the busts are no longer on display at the museum.
