Sun Inn
564 Main St, Bethlehem, PA
Built in 1758, this place is a living symbol of Bethlehem's hospitality. Guided tours are available, as is good food. Highly recommended. This is my wife's "favorite Arnold site" !
Author Clare Brandt states that Arnold and Gen. Horatio Gates lodged here at the Sun Tavern a week before Christmas in 1776. They were enroute from the north to report to Gen. Washington. While here, orders from Washington reached Arnold. He was to go to New England to rally militia against the British fleet.
Arnold quickly rode to meet with Washington at his Delaware River headquarters, then went on to Rhode Island.
Only three days after Arnold's departure, Washington launched his bold attack on Trenton, crossing the Delaware. I have often wondered if it was suggested by Arnold. The move was much more characteristic of Arnold than Washington.
