On November 21, 1776, at Gen. Schuyler's request, Generals Arnold, Gates and Brickett (a Mass. militia general) met at Schuyler's summer home to deal with soldiers' request for furloughs. Since militiamen had been allowed to return home at the end of the season's campaign (culminating with the Battle of Valcour Island), the Continental Army soldiers asked for time to return to their homes. Since the threat from the British was over for the year, these furloughs were granted, with the understanding that the furloughed soldiers encourage militia enlistments in their hometowns.

  • As the British withdrew after the Battle of Saratoga (a year after Arnold's visit), Burgoyne ordered Schuyler's house burned. Within 30 days, Schuyler had men at work rebuilding the house, and this is how it appears today.
