Gen. Philip Schuyler Grave

Albany Rural Cemetery, 48 Cemetery Av, Menands, NY

Schuyler commanded the Northern Department of the army during the 1775 invasion of Canada. Arnold was already acquainted with him from the Ticonderoga campaign, and spent time at his Albany home when passing through the area. He had confidence in Arnold's abilities, and was respected by Arnold.

Schuyler was eventually replaced by Gates after the fall of Fort Ticonderoga in 1777, but prior to that had been instrumental in the defense of the Hudson Valley up to and including the planning for the Saratoga stand.

He was originally buried in a family crypt behind the mansion at 32 Catherine St. His remains were later removed to the family's burial grounds at its country farm and estate, Schuyler Flatts, along the Hudson River in Menands, north of Albany. Schuyler Flatts was frequently used as an encampment spot for American troops. The farm and estate eventually fell into disrepair and the general's remains were moved to Albany Rural.
