Brethren's House (Bethlehem Military Hospital) *

Single Brethren's House, 89 West Church St (cor. Main St), Bethlehem, PA. The building is owned by Moravian College.

In December 1776, Dr. William Shippen (a relative of Peggy Shippen, who would become Benedict Arnold's second wife) was operating an army hospital in this building. As Gates and Arnold brought their troops from New York to Pennsylvania to join forces with Washington, they stopped in Bethlehem. John Ensor Harr, in his excellent historical novel "Dark Eagle, A Novel of Benedict Arnold and the American Revolution", has Arnold combining his training as an apothecary and his concern for the well-being of his troops, working in the hospital to care for soldiers.
