This island in the Richelieu River had been a base for the American invasion of 1775. Now, during the retreat from Canada, it held 8,000 Americans, half of which were sick with smallpox, malaria and dysentery. Hundreds died and are buried on the island. On June 20, the ferrying of the sick to Crown Point began. The suffering of these soldiers is indescribable.
The fortifications in these photos date to the mid-1800s.
