  1. Military Governor of Philadelphia

Mount Pleasant

Fairmount Park, Philadelphia, PA

Built by a Scottish sea captain in the 1760s, this home was called "the most elegant Seat in Pennsylvania" by John Adams.
In 1779, while military governor of Philadelphia, Benedict Arnold bought the house, subject to a lease by the Spanish envoy. It was a wedding gift for his bride Peggy Shippen. The Arnolds never lived here due to the lease, and then Arnold's transfer to the command at West Point.
