Catamount Tavern Site
Monument Av, just north of Rt 9, Bennington, VT
While the building is now gone (burned in 1871), this monument marks the location of the Catamount Tavern. Here Arnold had hoped to meet with Ethan Allen, who he heard was also planning to attack Fort Ticonderoga. Instead he found members of the Green Mountain Boys, who told him that Allen had already left for Castleton to prepare for the attack. Arnold hurried on the next day, May 8, 1775. See Randall, pp.89-90. Also see: http://www.bennington.com/?page_id=1336
