Historical Sites related to the Life and Career of Benedict Arnold

  1. As British General: in Virginia

Arnold's British Defenses, 1781 in Portsmouth *

There are three similar historical markers relating to the British defenses ordered by Arnold during his 1781 occupation of Portsmouth. I have designated them #1, #2 and #3.

Marker #1: at water's edge on Crawford Parkway 0.1 mi east of Court St, Portsmouth, VA

Marker #2: Washington St at King St, Portsmouth, VA

Marker #3: Crawford Parkway just west of Court St, Portsmouth, VA

This marker is located just off Crawford Parkway, alongside the water on the walking/biking path designated as Craford Bay Trail.

It is obvious to me that this marker is in the wrong location. An arc starting at marker #1 (situated just 0.1 mi east of this point) and extending through a midpoint at Washington and King Sts (at marker #2) could not have its southern point here! My guess is that when I-264 and the tunnels under the Elizabeth River were constructed, the area where this marker was originally situated was obliterated. Someone must have thought this spot, near other historical markers, would be a good new home for it!
