"The Chops" is a very narrow place where the entire flow of the Kennebec, Androscoggin and several other rivers, which have all entered Merrymeeting Bay, must pass to continue as the Kennebec River on the way to the Atlantic. The strong currents in this passage caused the expedition's ships to have to wait for favorable "slack" tide to continue on their up-river journey.
