The Chops

"The Chops" is a very narrow place where the entire flow of the Kennebec, Androscoggin and several other rivers, which have all entered Merrymeeting Bay, must pass to continue as the Kennebec River on the way to the Atlantic. The strong currents in this passage caused the expedition's ships to have to wait for favorable "slack" tide to continue on their up-river journey.

This newspaper photo shows the constriction that the entire flow of the Kennebec, Androscoggin and several smaller rivers must pass through (the small gap between the two headlands) to continue as the Kennebec River to the sea. The river flows left to right in this photo. My photos which follow were taken from the shore of the further headland, across the gap to the closer headland.
