Fort Popham
at the end of Rt 209 (Popham Rd), Phippsburg, ME (two miles beyond Popham Beach State Park)
Fort Popham guards the mouth of the Kennebec River. Here Arnold picked up a local pilot to guide his flotilla upriver to Gardiner's Town. The present structure dates from the Civil War era, and was built on the site of the original wooden fort.
