New Haven Green
bounded by Elm, Church, Chapel and College Sts, New Haven, CT
News of the British foray to Lexington and Concord reached New Haven on the 20th of April, 1775. The town meeting that night decided against sending help to the "Massachusetts radicals." However, Benedict Arnold, Captain of the recently formed Governor's Second Company of Foot (New Haven Militia), assembled his men the next morning. The Green had been the training ground for Arnold's militia company, and was their assembly point on the morning of April 21. Here Rev. Jonathan Edwards, the son of the great revivalist, offered a prayer of blessing for the troops. From here Arnold led his company to Boston, beginning his military career.
