Samuel Mansfield Grave
Grove Street Cemetery, 227 Grove St, New Haven, CT
Samuel Mansfield was a successful New Haven businessman and High Sheriff of the county. As early as 1765 he and Benedict Arnold were involved in joint business ventures. Arnold married his daughter Margaret Mansfield on September 27, 1767. They would have three sons together.
While Arnold was in command of the Lake Champlain area, Margaret died on June 19, 1775 at 30 years of age. The sad news brought Benedict home to New Haven. "Papa" Mansfield, as Arnold affectionately called him, had been regaining strength from a serious illness, but must have suffered a relapse, as he died three days after his daughter.
Arnold's sister Hannah, already helping with his business affairs in New Haven, promised to care for the boys when he left again to present himself to the new Commander-in-Chief, General George Washington, in Cambridge, MA.
