In the Fall of 1774, Arnold attended the First Continental Congress as an alternate delegate from Connecticut. The Congress met in Carpenters' Hall, which is now part of Independence National Historic Park.
During that time, at a political and social gathering at the home of Judge Edward Shippen, Arnold is supposed to have first met his future wife, Peggy Shippen, the Judge's fourteen-year-old daughter.
