Elmore was the officer at Fort Ticonderoga with whom Benedict Arnold was conversing when Col. Easton rudely interrupted, causing Arnold to kick Easton. The story is recounted in Brumwell's book "Turncoat," and in greater detail in Randall's "Benedict Arnold, Patriot and Traitor."
