Col. Benjamin Hinman Grave
Old Field Cemetery, Old Field Hill Road, Southbury, CT
Hinman, with 1000 men, was sent by the Connecticut legislature to garrison and restore Fort Ticonderoga. Massachusetts had failed to inform Arnold that they were turning over responsibility for the Champlain Theater to Connecticut, and that when they arrived, he should relinquish command and return to Cambridge to render his accounts. Thus Arnold was taken aback on June 16 when Hinman arrived and said he would take command of the entire region. Arnold's interpretation of Hinman's written orders was that he would command only Fort Ticonderoga, thus leaving Arnold in theater command. He therefore refused to reliquish command until June 22, when a delegation from Massachusetts arrived and informed him that he would be serving under Hinman. Arnold was greatly offended to be placed under a junior officer after all he had accomplished, and chose to resign his commission. And then he received news that his wife had died on June 19.
