Site of the duel: Kilburn Wells, London, England

Comments made by Lord Lauderdale in the House of Lords were taken by Benedict Arnold as a slight. He demanded a retraction or a duel. When Lauderdale refused to recant, the duel was set for 7AM on Sunday, July 1, 1792 at Kilburn Wells. A full account of the story is found in "Traitorous Hero," by Willard Wallace (pp. 297-299 in the first edition.)

  • At the time of the duel, Kilburn Wells was a place with iron-rich water and gardens in a rural area north of London. Today all has been built over, but there are markers to commemorate the place. This one is set into the sidewalk at the intersection of Belsize Road and Kilburn High Road, near the Kilburn High Road London Overground Station.
  • This building is at the same intersection (corner of Belsize Rd and Kilburn High Rd). Note the white square panel just to the left of the turret at the second story. The next photo will show this in close up.
