Snug Cove
On the SW coast of Campobello Island, New Brunswick, Canada
Some accounts say that this small bay to the west of Rt 189, one mile from the bridge onto the island from Eastport, ME, was the home of Benedict Arnold and his wife for a short time after the war. It is said that Peggy found the cove and island too snug and dull. See paragraph 2 on this webpage: http://www.mainerec.com/wcounty4.asp?Category=138&PageNum=138
Other authorities say it was a trading station that Arnold set up on Campobello, with a wharf for the loading of lumber and staves.

The photo dates to about 1870.
The caption (from the Eastport Sentinel 1854) reads: “The old wooden fish-stores that Benedict Arnold built at Campobello (on the English side), just opposite Lubec (on the American side) at the time when he was carrying on the smuggling business between St. John and this vicinity are standing yet, in good preservation. What a capital smuggler and deceiver, in both countries, Arnold must have been!”
