Watertown Meeting House Site

situated within Common Street Cemetery, Common St at Mount Auburn St, Watertown, MA

The marker is on the street corner at the above intersection. The four corners of the site of the meeting house are marked within the cemetery (see my photos.) Enter the cemetery at the intersection and look to your left for the marker posts.

Joyce Lee Malcolm, in her book "The Tragedy of Benedict Arnold," says that on his return from Fort Ticonderoga, Arnold reported to the Massachusetts Provincial Congress which was meeting here at the time. It was that body which had commissioned him to undertake the capture of the fort. During the two and a half weeks the Congress took to reach a decision regarding his use of public funds and the reimbursement due for the monies he had contributed, he went to see Gen. Washington regarding a new invasion of Canada.
